Champions League Fixtures This Evening: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & More

Welcome to a fresh evening of electrifying Champions League football. Nine fixtures are set for tonight, with 3 British teams in play. The Blues face Barcelona in the key fixture of the evening, whilst The Magpies travel to the French side and City host Bayer Leverkusen.

League Table

It's the midway stage of the group phase, so the rankings is beginning to form. Each of the six British clubs are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only two points separating fifth and sixteenth place, thus there's a hint of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. All remains open.

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter involving Newcastle and Marseille was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2003-04, won by an emerging superstar from Côte d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal during the opening period of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's sixth-minute sizzler has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil lead away to Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Even though The Magpies traveled to the south of France fresh from their restorative 2-1 home Premier League win over City on Saturday, and having beaten Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their sole on the road win since the start of April came in Brussels at Union SG.

It's not that Howe was eager to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The Champions League is distinct from Premier League games,” said the manager, whose side are sixth in the European table, with nine points from a possible twelve and automatic progression to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”

We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Murray, the MBM version of Maradona is on duty for that.
