Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released communications revealed that the official communicated with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his determination to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the organization commented.
Political Context
This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the desk of the White House for signature. He has stated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his view on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-related correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included several high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The messages indicated that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to link the academic to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, he stated he assumed "complete accountability for my poor choice to continue interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".
Career Background
The economist served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was not associated with the group.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
