The Problem

Few greenery test a person’s perseverance as much as ferns. At one moment they’re full of life; the next they appear like dry brush left on a radiator. Fern leaves crisp up at the slightest sign of low humidity, and once they turn brown, most assume it’s the end.

This Trick

Place the fern inside a transparent bag – but don’t seal it as it requires air circulation – and position it in bright but indirect light.

The Theory

This method forms a mini terrarium, trapping moisture near the plant. Consider it mimicking the rainforest atmosphere – the moist microclimate where ferns thrive. This won't water the plant for you, but it significantly reduces evaporation and encourages fragile young leaves to open up.

This Experiment

I used this trick on a common fern that looked beyond saving. Following a week and a half in its misty cocoon the soil was still damp and tiny new shoots started emerging. Within a few weeks, the plant was noticeably thicker and greener.

The Verdict

This isn’t a instant solution and some fronds might drop some fronds during the process, but the plastic bag method can truly rescue a fern near death. For zero cost, it’s one of the most successful revival techniques available.
