Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Secure Nostalgic Victory Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the City Ground as Forest fans celebrated a further win against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but the club still treasure those memories. Equally, major shifts have taken place in the five weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with the team looking refreshed and earning a convincing victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the European competition.

Building Momentum with Third Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their domestic league – marked a third straight win across all competitions and added to the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Liverpool. While this match was a reminder of the club's historic triumph in name, the encounter itself was free of any real jeopardy or nerves.

This was an event filled with sentiment, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive clash between the sides since the European Cup final over four decades past.

The home side leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's squad from then were also in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a meal together before the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates received a rousing reception when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically impressive tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.

Recalling the Past

“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read one part of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was unfurled as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. Another stunning display depicted Brian Clough watching events beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Start

So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an attempt wide inside two minutes and established a two-goal lead by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defense captained by their own academy product captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The home defender Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his maiden strike since March.

Second Goal Confirms Dominance

Yates was implicated in Forest’s next goal on the brink of the interval, too, his unmarked header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the playmaker handed a rare start and just his second appearance since September, was the catalyst, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned aside off the back Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked the defender had previously had a powerful header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to match Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from 30 yards. It was one of those evenings. The manager, mindful of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, made seven changes from the side that surprised the Reds at their ground recently, when they additionally scored three goals, though he called on substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.

Smooth Evening for the Team

It proved a hiccup-free night for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could take off Murillo with the game already sewn up and subsequently introduced teenage defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the club legends providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are capable of a few nuggets of excitement, too.
