Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
