The direst possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by researchers, encompassing a blistering 4C increase in temperatures to a two-metre increase in sea levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and power requirements.

These effects, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are considered as improbable but credible. The scientists stated that these models plugged a hole in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.

Another collection of dire projections details the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could rocket in some months by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be three times normal levels.
